I finished a book today… Next!

If you eat books on bread like I do :) I bet you’d wish some sort of a book manager to see what you’ve read in a chronological order. And you probably want to be closer to your book store, not having to open the browser, go to a page and search - you’ve probably done it a million times. Well you have a new friend, the Librarian gadget, that will always be there, on your desktop or in your sidebar, to help you.

What can I do?

A lot of things… First of all you have to know that you can use this gadget in any way that comes to mind, not just the intended one, which is this: When I start reading a new book, I introduce it in the book list, by clicking the + button and writing the book title. I don’t have to type a full name, for example “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”, I can just type the most relevant stuff related to the book, let’s say “Harry Potter 7” or “Harry Potter - Hallows”. When I click on any item of the book list, I can see the title, when I started reading it, how much it lasted + what’s cool is that I don’t have to have this book yet , I can set it as a goal for example, and I can find out more about it and even buy it.

If I don’t like it, I can rename it from the gadget menu, and other books of your choice will appear, since all the searches made on Amazon.com or Google Books are related to the title you specify.

The book list - can I print it?

I wouldn’t have said it if it wasn’t possible :) You can export the book list to a text document on your desktop, all with one click in the gadget menu. You just have to open the .txt file, maybe even make some of your own edits if you want, and then just hit Print.

I ran out of books :/ OR there’s that new book everyone’s talking about :)

Either way, your book thirst needs to be quenched :) Searching for the book is what you’ll ultimately do, but now you can do it straight from within the gadget, where you see the “Search Books” message… If you have no idea what you want to read, just click on the book button without typing anything: a list of Amazon bestsellers will pop up.

Social networking is viral, marketing is viral… this age, books are viral too

Many people say that the Internet is the death of the book. I don’t think so, it’s only the beginning of a wonderful adventure, where our access to books is made easier by services like Amazon or Google Books. If it weren’t for the Internet, I still wouldn’t have books like “Hunters of Dune”, “Sandworms of Dune” or “Children of Hurin”, literary masterpieces, which haven’t appeared yet in my country :/

This gadget helps reading books get viral because, if you have Google Talk, you’ll be able to share what you’re reading with friends and, in turn, see what they’re reading as well. If they aren’t using the gadget yet, you can send an invitation through the gadget itself. Also, if they’re reading something and you like it, you can buy it too; for all these options just click your friend’s name. To access the friends window, just click “Options” in the gadget menu or the blue arrow button before the book list.

I like books to much not to have done something to popularize them :) I hope you like my Librarian gadget for Google Desktop; if you have any suggestions, please don’t hesitate to tell me by using the “Contact” link in the top menu.

Thanks, and Happy Reading!

Above is an example of a search page which can be opened from the book ‘details view’. The details view appears when you click on a book in the list, and contains stats and relevant links. You can also trigger a search page by directly double-clicking the book.
